…and the awkward silence that ensues when you don’t know what to say
This happened to me a little over a year ago. I was kinda surprised. They chose me because I had just turned eighteen, and they wanted the youngest adult to lead the family in prayer.
I respectfully forfeited the honor to my grandfather.
I faked it and felt really shitty about it. It had been so long since I’d said a sincere prayer that’d I had almost forgotten how. I stumbled over the entire thing.
So to resolve the issue, I did two things:
1. Told my grandmother that I’m an atheist, so it’s probably best not to ask me to say grace anymore
2. Came up with a humanist grace that I do say from time to time and if I’m ever asked again I will use it
What is your humanist grace? I want to know so bad because I could really use it.
Ah yes, awkward. I always go with the old Robert Burns standby - the Selkirk Grace:
“Some hae meat an’ canna’ eat,
And some wid eat that want it,
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
And sae the lord be thankit.”
