Itinerary Change

We’re flying to Hanoi tomorrow. Our original plan had been to keep heading down Laos, in to the southern part of the country, then overland to Siem Reap in Cambodia, and from there to Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon.) Having done some more research the land border between Laos and Cambodia would force us to spend a lot of time on the bus along bad roads. We’ve had a couple of journeys like that already and they weren’t much fun. It’s not terribly backpacker-ey, but we prefer being somewhere than getting there. I know the buddha teaches that the journey is supposed to be the thing, but why be uncomfortable?

So we’re flying from here (Vientiane) to Hanoi in northern Vietnam. We’ll probably stay there about a week, and then head up to Tha Long bay for a boat tour. Then we’ll work our way down Vietnam, north to south. We plan to spend close to a month there. Then we can go to Cambodia from Saigon, on much better roads. It also leaves us the option to spend a little time in Malaysia, if we find ourselves ahead of schedule. Our flight to Adelaide leaves from Kuala Lumpur on September 6th.

So on Wednesday we’ll be waking up in the land of smiles. When day dreaming about the trip from the comfort of our apartment, offices and various bars around San Francisco, Vietnam was the country we were most excited to visit. We’re about to find out if it’ll live up to our expectations. It’s looking positive already - the vast majority of the hotels we’ve researched in Hanoi have free wifi in every room. :-)

I think it is a dish native to Vietnam-Wifi over rice served with basil/chili sauce-yum:)
