Phi Phi (+Photos)

Posted on July 16, 2007

We’re staying at the Paradise Beach Resort, (or is it bungalows?) not to be confused with Paradise Pearl Beach Resort (right next door.) Four nights. Beach time, and diving.

Ko Phi Phi is simply beautiful. Long beach, where we are staying, is about 2km long, with bungalows set back about 20 meters from the beach the whole way, and a step incline into jungle about another 100 meters behind those.

Ton Sai, the village and pier, is about a 20 minute walk along the beach, over some jungle paths and then along the walkways (there are no roads, or carson Phi Phi.) There’s more of a tourist scene over there, with day trippers from Phuket and elsewhere, and cheaper, denser accommodation options.

Phi Phi was badly hit by the Tsunami in 2004. We’ve heard it mentioned once or twice, but it’s not a common subject among those who live here. I’ve heard the same about New Yorkers and 9/11. It’s totally understandable. A horrible tragedy that you lived through when many didn’t, and you share your grief quietly with those who live around you. Outsiders cannot possibly imagine what it was like to be there on that day, and it’s impossible to explain.

Another of getting from Ton Sai village to long beach is by long tail boat. Whenever you draw close to the harbor you hear the call ‘boat boat boat’ - the long tail drivers and their associates asking if you want to rent a boat for the day, or to get a boat taxi somewhere. Unfortunately most of the time our destination was too wavy for the boats to handle (or the drivers were too lazy to take us such a short distance.)

Check out the pictures, they tell a better story :-)
