In Phuket town we felt very white, we saw less than a couple of dozen other obvious travelers. Once we got to the ferry terminal things changed, and now on Phi Phi it’s pretty milky white. Most everyone seems to be pretty chill, even in the larger groups.
There are many groups of English and Irish, with some Aussies and South Africans mixed in. The rest of Western Europe is well represented also. We’ve heard a few Americans, most memorably on the hammocks outside our bungalow (they were all, we were all like, etc.) I haven’t heard a Scottish accent yet (not even my own, I sound like a Canadian.)
And then there are the Canadians. They seem to be everywhere. Our working theory is that they come here in a desperate attempt to differentiate themselves from Americans. Our first day on the SCUBA boat there were a dozen of them, and then four more the second day. The most memorable were a couple who seemed to be so over the diving we were doing, giving off an air of many years of experience. When prompted they told us they were certified three weeks ago.
As we head into the interior, away from the beach, it’s going to be interesting to keep an eye on the mix.
