What I’m Packing
Posted on July 16, 2007
Here’s a list of the gizmos I’m lugging around on my back into areas with no electricity…
Apple Macbook Pro (about a year old) + travel power supply
Nikon D40 + charger + 2 2GB SD cards + 2 1GB SD cards
18-55mm Nikon DX lens
50mm f1.8 Nikon AF lens (manual focus on D40)
60GB video iPod + earphones
inMotion iPod speakers + power supply
Nokia 6682 + charger
1-2-call SIM, Cingular SIM, Orange (UK pay-go) SIM
2 CAT5 cables, 3.5″ to RCA for iPod, 3.5″ to 3.5″ for iPod
10cm USB to mini USB cable
(and as always, his international GEEK ID card -CM)
Software
ecto [url] - allows us to write posts off-line and upload them when we have internet access. Seems to work pretty well, will need to purchase the full version soon since the trial will be running out before we get to Vietnam.
Aperture [url] - photo workflow software. Makes it easy to work with the dozens of photos we take every day. I’ve been using smart folders to organize them into sets to upload to flickr when we have a net connection, and for that I use…
flickr uploadr for Aperture - makes it nice and easy to set the upload going when we do have a connection. I haven’t figured out how the Aperture metadata to flickr metadata mappings are configured though, need to spend a little time with this one. I purchased the full version rather than the ‘lite’ version, which allows us to add comments and so on offline.
Gizmo - VOIP service that’s open source (unlike Skype.) Haven’t used it yet on the trip, but I did test it out from home in San Francisco after our long distance got cut off, works great.
And on a side-note, I have to share that the Nikon D40 battery life is amazing. We must have taken several hundred photos so far, all in raw mode. I last charged the battery before we moved out of our apartment in San Francisco, which is about 10 days ago now. It’s still showing full charge. I’m wondering if I even needed to bring the charger. It would have been nice to leave it behind since the cord is about 18 feet long (I found a shorter one, about 2ft in my box of cords, so I’m carrying that one instead.)
